UGG Australia Boot - History

The origin of the UGG Australia boot can be traced back to the early 1930s when enterprising farmers created the boot to keep their feet warm. The next identifiable step in the history of the Ugg Australia boot is that during World War I, pilots wore a fleece-lined "FUG" or (flying ugg) boot.

It wasn't however until the 1960s when west coast Australian surfers took up the 'ugly boot' that the modern UGG Australia boot was born. Every surfer worth their salt had to have a pair of Uggs to warm their chilled feet, and fit into the counter culture that was surfing in the 60s and 70s. Elsewhere people in Australia would often wear ugg boots around the house during the mild winters.

It wasn't long before the UGG Australia boot spread to the east coast surf beaches from Brisbane to Sydney and it was probably only another six months until the Ugg boot was first seen in ski resorts, as surfers traded their boards for skis.

Well traveled surfers from Southern California returning home first introduced the UGG Australia boot to L.A. Around this time an enterprising Australian by the name of Brian Smith took his wares to New York. The Ugg Australia boot soon became a cult fashion among L.A. surfers when they could get their hands on a pair. Whether by chance, perfect timing, or business necessity Brian Smith arrived in L.A and discovered a captive market for the boots.

In his first season in business Brian acquired 5 accounts and sold 48 pairs of Ugg Australia boots. Now Ugg boots, clogs, slippers, ponchos, handbags and homeware is sold from LA to New York, Tokyo to London and everywhere in between. Nowadays Brian Smith continues to keeps the Australian spirit alive as a spokesperson for the UGG brand.
